I’ve been getting a lot of comment spam lately and it really escalated a couple of days ago when I get almost 20 a day (which is my personal threshold for tolerating comment, spam).
I wasn’t too worried about it to be honest because given the wealth of WordPress plugins out there, I’m very confident that there’s one which will solve my comment spam problem.
After a quick search, I found the perfect solution. It is a plugin from akismet .com.
This plugin is free for non-commercial users and promises to be a zero-maintenance solution. Just activate and forget about it……akismet will do it’s magic unobtrusively in the background.
Installation is pretty straightforward, just download it, unzip it in the plugins directory and activate it from the admin pages. One thing though……you’ll need to have an API key which you can get from registering for free for a wordpress.com blog. If you are already on wordpress.com, this number is in your profile page. If like me, you are hosting WordPress not on wordpress.com, you can register a dummy blog there just to get the API key.
