Disaster strikes!

When I came back from the recent Merdeka1 holiday, I found out that my website is no longer working. There was no response when I typed my URL in the browser. Then it occurred to me that my web hosting might have expired……but somehow I did not get any notification from my host. I’ve registered for this hosting sometime last year but didn’t do much with it until very recently. It was with one of those cheapo webhosting services that shall remain nameless.

To be honest I’m not a happy customer because since I joined them, they’ve asked me to change hosting three times (at no charge). I’ve no idea why, probably going out of business I guess, and their customer service is nothing to shout about (except in anger).

Anyways, I decided that this would be a good opportunity to try out a newer web hosting service. So I went to FindMyHosting.com and did a search for a web hosting service that fits my needs. After comparing a few hosts I’ve decided to go with ANR Host because it appeared first on the search list for PHP hosting and because of it’s 100% customer score rating.

Within a few minutes of using my credit card I was back in business.

It was a good thing that I’ve backed up the contents of my website using the excellent WP-DB-Backup plugin a few days before going on holiday.

So folks, the lesson for today is backup…backup…backup.

  1. Merdeka is the Malay word for ‘Independence’. Malaysia celebrates its 48th independence day (from the British) on the 31st of August 2005. I was doing my ‘Rescue Diver’ course in Tioman island during that long weekend which will be the subject for another blog entry. [back]
